We recommend inspecting and cleaning the brake drums every time you change the brake shoes, which is usually every three to five years depending on use. If the caravan stands unused for long periods it is worth checking the brake system once a year, so the drums do not rust solid.

Why is it important to smooth the drum when changing the brake shoes?

When you fit new brake shoes it is important that the drum has an even, clean surface for good contact. Grinding away rust, dirt and unevenness makes sure the new shoes bed in properly, which gives better braking and a longer life for the components.

Can I use any puller if the brake drum is stuck?

There are pullers made specifically for brake drums, and those are the ones we recommend. A universal puller can work, but make sure it has the right span and grip points for your particular drum.
