The breakaway cable connects the trailer to the tow vehicle independently of the coupling. If the coupling comes off the ball, the cable pulls the handbrake lever and stops the trailer. It is a legal requirement on braked trailers in most countries.
How to choose
Match the length to the trailer. The cable has to be long enough to allow full turning without pulling on the handbrake, and short enough that it applies the brake before the trailer separates completely. Check the end fitting as well, since some use a ring and others a clip.

The cable works through the handbrake mechanism on the overrun device, so the lever and its return spring need to be in working order for the cable to do anything. Hitch locks cover a different risk, the trailer being stolen while parked.
