Why a corner protector goes under the lashing

The protector sits over the corner of the load so the strap or chain runs across a formed face instead of a sharp edge. That keeps the edge from cutting into the lashing as it is tensioned, and spreads the pressure so the corner of the load is not crushed. The rubber back lies against the load, which keeps the steel from marking it and helps the protector stay where it was placed while the lashing is pulled tight.
