Why a corner protector goes under the lashing

The protector sits over the corner of the load so the webbing runs across a formed face instead of a sharp edge. Webbing loses strength quickly once the weave has been cut, which is why the edge matters more than the tension does. Plastic is light enough to hold in place with one hand while the strap is fed over it. Position it before tensioning and check it has stayed put once the strap is tight.
