Finding the correct coupling head
Finding the right coupling head for your trailer requires checking a few key measurements and specifications. Browse our full range of coupling heads to find the right model for your trailer once you have identified the correct specifications.
Check the Total Weight Rating
The coupling head you choose must have a total weight rating that matches or exceeds the total weight of your trailer. You can find the total weight of your trailer in the registration certificate or technical documentation. Never fit a coupling head with a lower weight rating than the trailer’s total weight.
Measure the Connection Tube (Drawtube)
Coupling heads for braked trailers are bolted onto the drawtube. It is important to measure the outer diameter of the drawtube and compare it with the inner diameter of the coupling head’s mounting point. Some universal coupling heads come with adapter inserts, allowing a heavier coupling head to fit a thinner drawtube. Coupling heads for unbraked trailers are available for both round and square tubes.
Check the Hole Pattern
The hole pattern determines how the coupling head is bolted to the drawtube. The two bolts can be arranged in one of three ways: vertical (bolts running from top to bottom), horizontal (bolts running from side to side), or crossed (both horizontal and vertical bolts). You also need to check the centre-to-centre (c-c) spacing between the bolts to ensure the new coupling head matches the existing hole positions on your drawtube.
Braked vs. Unbraked Trailers
Coupling heads for braked trailers include an overrun brake mechanism and are designed for heavier loads. Unbraked trailer coupling heads are simpler in design and suited to lighter trailers. Make sure you select the correct type for your trailer’s braking configuration.
