The brake shoes sit in the drum brake and are pressed against the inner surface of the brake drum when the brakes are applied. Friction creates braking power that slows wheel rotation. During service, brake shoes and springs should be checked. Worn linings give reduced braking power and longer braking distance. Always replace brake shoes in pairs on the same axle.
