Right-hand and left-hand threads

A right-hand nut tightens clockwise and is the standard thread on most fixings. Where a left-hand thread is used, the two are not interchangeable — a nut of the wrong hand will not run on, and forcing it damages the thread it is fitted to. Check which hand of thread the fixing has before ordering, and compare the original number if the part is being replaced on an existing installation.
