Parts of the overrun brake
The drawbar slides in the housing, running on bushes and damped by an overrun damper. A rubber bellows keeps water and dirt out of the tube. The handbrake lever applies the brakes when the trailer is parked, working through a gear segment and a spring housing.
Symptoms and what they point to
A worn damper shows as jerky braking rather than as a clear fault. Worn bushes show as play in the drawbar when the trailer is uncoupled. A split bellows lets water into the tube, which affects the parts inside it.
How to identify your overrun device
Parts are chosen by the make and model of the overrun device, which is marked on the device itself, not by the trailer. The same manufacturer uses different internals across model generations, so the model code matters as much as the make.
