How do I adjust brakes from Knott?

At least once a year, you need to adjust the brakes or after changing brake shoes.

When adjusting the brakes, tighten the bolt for braking adjustment so that the brake drum sits firmly and unable to rotate. Now loosen the bolt until the brake drum rotates easily again.

Turn the drum in the driving direction only while you adjust it. The wheel brake has a reversing mechanism that lets the brake shoes give way when the drum turns backwards. Turning it the wrong way therefore gives a false reading — the drum feels free while the brake is still incorrectly adjusted. Check the result by turning the drum forwards.
