Routing the brake cable on a trailer

A bracket holds the brake cable on a fixed path along the frame so it is not left hanging or rubbing against something that moves, and so the cable enters the brake in a straight pull rather than around a bend. A cable that is allowed to move about wears at whatever it touches and the play shows up as a soft brake. Check that the cable runs freely in the bracket and that the fixing has not worked loose.
