The brake lining is the friction material mounted on the brake shoe in a drum brake. When the brake system is activated the brake shoe is pressed against the inside of the brake drum and the friction between the brake lining and drum creates the braking effect that reduces the wheel's rotation. When refurbishing brake shoes worn brake linings should be replaced and new lining rivets installed correctly to ensure the brake system functions as intended.
