Gas springs on a tailgate
A gas spring carries part of the weight of the tailgate, so it opens under control and holds itself up once open. The force rating decides how much weight it takes and the centre to centre distance decides whether it reaches the existing mounting points, so both have to match. Where a tailgate has two springs, replacing both at once keeps the lift even. A gas spring is a sealed unit, replaced rather than repaired.
