The extra length of a long nut gives more thread engagement than a standard nut, which is what lets the length of a brake rod joint be set and then held while the rod is under a steady pull. Because that setting decides how soon the brakes take hold, adjust the wheel brakes first and set the rod afterwards, then make sure the rod is wound far enough into the nut before locking it. Check the thread for damage when the linkage is dismantled.
