Hood straps and how they hold

A hood strap holds a lid or hatch shut by tension rather than by a mechanism, so the two fixing points have to sit far enough apart that the strap is stretched when it is hooked on. Too close together and the lid rattles. Rubber loses its pull with age, sunlight and cold, which makes the strap a wear part: replace it when it no longer holds the hood down or when the surface has started to crack. Choosing between the 122 mm and the 70 mm strap is a matter of the distance you need to span.
