    Why the lock has a chain

    The chain is the backup on the lock: if the lock itself is knocked open on the road, the chain holds the part it is fitted to instead of letting it swing free. A PVC chain will not mark paintwork the way bare steel does. Look over the links and the end fittings when you check the lock, and replace a chain that is worn rather than trying to repair it.
