Why the lock has a chain

The chain is the backup on the lock: if the lock itself is knocked open on the road, the chain holds the part it is fitted to instead of letting it swing free. Look over the links and the end fittings when you check the lock, and replace a chain that is stretched or worn rather than trying to repair it.
