Why a corner protector goes under the lashing

The protector sits over the corner of the load so the chain runs across a formed face instead of a sharp edge. That spreads the pressure and keeps the corner of the load from being crushed as the chain is tensioned, while the chain itself is not dragged over a cut edge. Position the protector before the chain is pulled tight and check that it has stayed put once the tension is on.
