Bolted joints on a trailer
A locking nut keeps its grip on the thread when the joint is worked by vibration from the road, where a plain nut would gradually back off. The flat washers spread the load under the nut and the bolt head so that surface is not dented as the joint is pulled up. A locking nut is replaced rather than reused once it has been undone, and the joint is worth checking again after the first loaded trip.
