Braked or unbraked
A coupling head for a braked trailer bolts onto the overrun device and transmits braking force. A coupling head for an unbraked trailer only has to hold the trailer to the ball. Fitting the wrong one leaves a braked trailer without working brakes.
How to choose a coupling head
Three things have to match. The weight rating, which must cover the gross weight on the trailer plate. The drawbar tube diameter, where 50 mm, 35 mm and 60 mm are the common sizes here. And the bolt pattern in the drawbar, since the hole spacing differs between makes.
Coupling parts
Tow balls, brake pad kits and covers are available separately, and tow eyes cover trailers with a ring coupling instead of a ball. If the coupling itself is sound but the braking feels wrong, the fault is more often in the overrun damper behind it.
