What the maximum load means
The stated maximum load applies to the shackle on its own. In a complete assembly it is the lowest rated component that sets the limit, so a shackle with a higher rating does not raise the capacity of the chain, strap or eye it is connected to. Inspect the shackle before use and take it out of service if it is deformed, worn or damaged rather than putting it back to work.
