Securing a load
Ratchet straps are the usual method and come in several widths and lengths. Cargo nets hold loose material that would blow off an open trailer, and rubber straps and hooks cover lighter jobs such as holding a cover down. E-track rails give fixed anchoring points in a van or a box trailer, and winches pull a load onto the bed in the first place.
Lifting
Webbing slings and chain slings carry the load, hooks and shackles connect it, and lifting clamps grip plate and pipe directly. Chain blocks and lever hoists do the lifting.
Working load limit
Every piece of lifting and lashing equipment carries a rated working load. It is the figure that matters, not what the equipment looks like it could take. The rating applies to the whole assembly, so a chain sling is only as strong as the weakest hook or shackle in it.
